Research Centre of Metal Structures
The Research Centre of Metal Structures has operated in the Institute of Structural Engineering of the Faculty of Business and Built Environment at Tampere University of Technology (TUT) since 2004. Its main unit is located in Seinäjoki in conjunction with the University Consortium of Seinäjoki. The Centre also has sub-units in Hämeenlinna and Tampere.
The Research Centre of Metal Structuresstudies metal structuresand construction processes from design to end use. The research is both theoretical and experimental. Facilities for experimental research exist in Seinäjoki, Hämeenlinna and Tampere.
IT applications play a key position in the research. Fire safety of metal structures and overall optimisation of buildings are central research areas. The bulk of the Centre’s activity has consisted of commissioned research for companies.
International influence has been exercised through active participation in the activities of ECCS(European Convention for Constructional Steelwork), EG-ICE(European Group for Intelligent Computing in Engineering) and ISCCBE (The International Society for Computing in Civil and Building Engineering) as well as the development of Eurocodes and RFCS (Research Fund for Coal and Steel) projects.
